This recipe uses “sella” basmati rice, it is aromatic, nutty and forever al dente

Sella basmati rice is partially pre-cooked and dried,  this makes it almost impossible to overcook it making it “gluggy” free.

Serves 6 Preparation time 5 min
Cooking time 20 – 25 min

  • 2 cups rice – basmati (sella)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1-2 tsp ghee/coconut oil/butter (optional)

1 Place 2 cups of rice in a saucepan,

Wash the rice multiple times until the water is clear

2 Add 4 cups of cold water, salt and oil and place on medium heat  smitsfoodblog 2- wahed rice
3 Boil rice on medium heat until the rice and the water are almost level (7-10 minutes)

Reduce heat to very low, cover with lid and cook for 15 min.

Gently stir the rice a couple of time during cooking

4  Do a taste test, if not cooked add a splash of water and steam a little longer  smitsfoodblog - cooked rice

5  Option 1

Use other types of rice – long grain, jasmine, brown, etc – method is similar however the water quantity and times may vary depending on the heat, rice size, size of saucepan

New Dishes

  • Add a combination of diced onions, carrots, potato and spices, lightly fry or
  • Fry up some minced meat, diced potato, peas and lemon juice

Add to the uncooked rice in step 3

  • Replace water with coconut water or stock in step 3
